By offering greater accuracy, the ability to access hard-to-reach areas, reduced costs, and improved safety, drones are playing a larger role in indoor inspections worldwide. Unfortunately, some companies have been reluctant—or simply unable—to join the drone revolution. In many cases, prohibitive costs and difficulties around staff training staff have stood in the way.

Terra Xross 1

Terra Drone’s new indoor inspection drone, the Terra Xross 1, stands ready to address those issues and help businesses reap the benefits of uncrewed technology.

“The Terra Xross 1 is a game changer in the indoor inspection market,” Terra Drone Board Director Kota Kandori told Commercial UAV News. “Its low cost, ease of use, and stability make it an ideal solution.”

Introduced earlier this year, the Terra Xross 1 was designed as an affordable, easy-to-use, drone for indoor inspection work. The vehicle incorporates visual odometry sensors and lidar to ensure stable flights in challenging environments. Moreover, the vehicle supports both battery-powered operation and tethered power module. By allowing the drone to operate with the aid of a constant power supply, operators can take advantage of continuous flight capabilities and reduce the risk of crashes caused by power depletion.

For operators, the Terra Xross 1 is an easy-to-fly vehicle that does not require specialized piloting skills. That allows businesses to get up and running quickly and start taking advantage of the accuracy and cost-savings the vehicle offers. Also, the Terra Xross 1 is affordable. Coming in at around $25,000, the drone is well within reach of many companies seeking to add uncrewed technology to their indoor operations.

“Our main purpose in producing the Terra Xross 1 was to broaden our market and provide our technologies to more potential customers,” Kandori explained. He stated that the Terra Drone product developers were focused on keeping costs low while also ensuring that the vehicle was stable and easy to use. Terra Drone’s lean and focused approach to product development enabled the firm to create this innovative product.

“For this product, we developed the new product with our experienced in-house development team. It took them about one year.”

These employees, he said, were focused on balancing technological capabilities with affordability. “We tried to make it as simple as possible by focusing only on the essential features required for indoor visual inspections, based on on-site needs, and we didn’t want to add too many extra features,” Kandori stated. “It was important to get stability, to keep the drone small, and to make it so anyone could fly it,” he said. Kandori credited his experienced, talented and “hard working” staff for enabling the company to accelerate the development process and achieve its goals for the product.

Looking forward, Kandori said that Terra Drone will continue to draw on its experience in the uncrewed inspections field to make enhancements and bring its technology to new markets. The company, he reported, has been involved in more than 1,500 inspections projects, including some inspections for the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) industry, conducted in collaboration with the top three companies in the sector.

The development and launch of the Terra Xross 1, Kandori said, is a “road map” for the development of future products and services. With its reliability, low cost, and ease of use, he sees the drone as a potential driver of growth in the indoor drone inspection market.

“We believe that the launch of Terra Xross 1 will bring a revolutionary change to the US market by expanding the potential user base,” he stated.
