Many believe that “Part 108,” the FAA’s forthcoming rules to standardize drone flights beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS), will revolutionize the commercial drone industry. They say that Part 108 will unlock the true potential of uncrewed systems by clearing the way for longer, faster, more effective drone operations.
But while we wait for Part 108’s release, there are many things that commercial drone operators can do today to increase operational efficiency and improve ROI. In fact, there are many recent examples of commercial drone operators securing BVLOS waivers to conduct long-range missions in uncontrolled airspace.
For missions ranging from oil & gas asset inspection to package delivery to public safety, drone operators are taking steps to improve their UAV programs by securing FAA waivers. They’re not waiting for Part 108.
For example:
- In January, American Robotics secured an FAA BVLOS waiver allowing it to fly over people and moving vehicles from a centralized remote operations center. This will allow American Robotics to better serve its customers in fields such as public safety to critical infrastructure inspection.
- Flock Safety and the Elk Grove Police Department secured an FAA waiver enabling their Drone as First Responder (DFR) system to fly unrestricted, without a human observer, up to 400 feet across its entire jurisdiction. The waiver was granted for the use of Flock Aerodome—a multi-dock, multi-drone DFR system with an average response time of 85 seconds to calls for service.
- DEXA received a FAA BVLOS waiver in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, enabling the company to expand its drone delivery operations. By allowing for complex operations in areas where drone flights had been restricted, the approval gives DEXA the ability to serve new markets and offer more services.
- Titan Protection and Consulting was granted a FAA BVLOS waiver, which will allow the company to fly surveillance drones across the US without requiring individual, location-specific waivers. The approval lets Titan deploy Autonomous Response and Patrol drones to monitor, respond to, and inspect all areas of a property on demand, including blind spots and hard-to-reach areas with greater efficiency.
