Cucuyo and Cavok UAS announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and entered into a strategic partnership. The companies will work together to demonstrate Cucuyo’s laser communication terminal installed on Cavok UAS drones. Upon successful completion, further cooperation is envisaged to promote joined solutions tailored to the unmanned aerial vehicles and systems (UAV/UAS) market.

Cavok UAS designs and manufactures professional drones. The equipment is customized to the operational requirements of each mission. Cucuyo specializes in small and lightweight laser-based communication terminals – with the first product, Cucuyo P-100, being optimized for aerial platforms, drones, and UAV/UAS.

The MoU outlines the next steps of the partnership between both companies. In the first phase Cavok UAS will integrate Cucuyo’s P-100 terminal into a Cavok drone and perform flight testing to validate interfaces and vibrations. In the second phase the partners will test the full functionality of the P-100 on a Cavok platform including laser communication testing between a ground station and a drone.

“As our customers need is to operate in GNSS contested environment, Cavok UAS is looking for systems that increase the resilience to detection and jamming. Cucuyo laser communication system would be an ideal solution in that respect, and we are pleased to enter into this collaboration to validate a working solution”, says Fabrice Parodi, CEO Cavok UAS.

“Cucuyo is excited to be working with Cavok UAS as a trusted strategic partner in the long term. Cavok UAS offers its diverse customer base a full range of high-performance drones that can be customized for a variety of applications such as cargo delivery or security. They have shown immediate interest in using laser communication as a possible addition to their solutions. The platforms are therefore ideally suited for Cucuyo demonstration purposes and for a future strategic collaboration”, comments Dr. Markus Knapek, CTO & Managing Director Cucuyo.

About Cucuyo: Cucuyo manufactures laser-based communication products for a wide range of applications. The declared aim is to bring laser communication terminals to the market as an off-the-shelf product. The first product, the P-100 terminal, is designed for use on smaller UAVs. Power consumption, weight and data rate are dimensioned accordingly. Areas of application for laser communication include all types of data connections that go beyond the capabilities of classic radio frequency links. Laser communication offers 50 times more data rate than radio communication and cannot be jammed, spoofed, or intercepted. It is particularly suitable for unmanned aerial systems (UAV/UAS), which transmit large amounts of data from on-board sensors and require resilient communication. The company is headquartered in Pfaeffikon SZ, Switzerland, with a German subsidiary in Krailling near Munich.
